The Album.
Once Upon a Highway is a collection of 11 songs that feels to me like sitting around in the backyard on a summer day with an old good friend you haven’t seen in a long time; sharing some beers and hearing their stories, like catch me up, tell me everything. I meant for it to work as a whole experience rather than just one or two songs on the radio. Each song plays a role in the journey, and the order of the songs is very intentional and helps in the story. I hope you will lend me 39 minutes of your time and maybe you’ll shed a few tears and crack a few beers and smiles along the way…you won't be disappointed.
The Story.
It started off as just a way to get some songs off my chest, that I felt like deserved to be pitched around town, and my publisher responded in a way that made me explore what would happen if we put a record out.
I really wanted to make something that reflects who I am, not only as a songwriter, but also as a singer, which is something I don’t often get to do. I wanted the project to have my personality and sound like hanging out with Steppy (my nickname in my old band, and what a lot of friends and collaborators still call me).
I hoped that I could get someone who understood me, and was a fan of what I do, to produce. Fortunately, one of my best buddies and most frequent collaborators, Will Bowen, a great singer songwriter in his own right, was willing to work on it with me. Will is just so musical, and as an artist, he admittedly, hears himself in a lot of the songs I write. So it was a no brainer for him to produce the record. He built the tracks and played all the instruments and sang a lot of the background vocals.
I asked some of my amazing co-writers, who are also amazing artists, to come lend their voices to the project, and they were kind enough to do that.
Be sure not to miss the focus track of the album which is Unlived Lives, a haunting duet featuring the incredible Grammy nominated Brandy Clark.
